This is a 4-week in-person machine sewing course that meets once a week on Wednesday evenings from 6:15pm - 8:15pm and begins on October 29. The class will be held in our sewing area at Community and has a maximum class size of 6 students.
In this course, we will be making the Cameron Button Up Shirt from Helen’s Closet Patterns. This classic button up has a boxy fit and includes signature features like a collar and collar stand, front button placket, and sleeve plackets (in the long-sleeved view). The pattern works for any gender and has a size range of 0-34 (33” - 62″ hip).
Intermediate sewing skills are required for this course. Students need to have an understanding of their machine and its settings, as well as basic clothing construction and finishing techniques. If you have never used a sewing machine or made a garment before, please take our Beginners Sewing and Beginners II courses before signing up for this class.
This pattern:
-
Has a classic boxy, dartless shape that can be sized up or down depending on your personal style
-
Includes a front button placket and optional chest pocket
-
Has the option of short or long sleeves
-
Can be made with a variety of woven fabrics, from a cozy flannel to a summer-friendly linen
What you’ll learn:
-
How to choose the right woven fabric for your chosen look
-
How to read and use a multi-size pattern (approx. 33″–62″ hips)
-
How to make basic pattern modifications, like lengthening or shortening the body and sleeves and grading between sizes
-
How to sew the trickier elements, like the collar and collar stand and the sleeve plackets (on the long-sleeved version)
Level: Intermediate, perfect if you’ve sewn garments before and want to learn some new skills.
Supplies other than the sewing pattern are not included. **You are responsible for bringing your own sewing machine and supplies.** You will receive a supply list from the instructor at least five days before the course begins.
The instructor, Nissa McKinney, began her sewing journey more than ten years ago at a beginner’s class at Community. That class gave her the foundation she needed to start sewing more advanced projects. Today, a large percentage of her wardrobe is handmade - from jeans and t-shirts to coats and dresses. Sewing has become her superpower! When not sewing, she works s a writer for a kids' science journal, provides shuttle service for her two kids, and squeezes in a dance class or two at Dancefx. -
