This is a 4-week in person machine sewing course that meets once a week. It guides the students through the process of making a pair of Magic Pants using a pattern by Ann Tilley, a textile artist, clothing designer + teacher from Durham, NC. The class meets on Thursday evenings from 6:15pm - 8:15pm and will be held in our sewing area at Community with a maximum class size of 6 students. The sewing pattern is included in the price of the course.
Intermediate sewing skills are required for this course. Students need to have an understanding of their machine and its settings, and basic clothing construction and finishing techniques. If you have never used a sewing machine or made a garment before, please take our Beginners Sewing and/or Beginners II courses before signing up for this class.
With the holidays quickly approaching, why not create a wardrobe that looks chic and keeps you comfortable through all of the big gatherings ahead? No need to pick between comfort and style. Join us as we make our own (appropriately named) Magic Pants — pants that look polished and tailored, yet are “magically” flux-friendly.
Featuring:
-
A sailor-style front flap that conceals a stretchy ribbed knit panel so you can pull them over your hips with ease, then snap or button them in place.
-
Generous, deep front pockets hidden behind that flap - perfect for stashing your essentials.
-
A modern, wide leg silhouette.
-
Adjustable waist thanks to D-rings, snaps, and hidden elastic - so you can customize the fit to YOUR shape.
What you’ll learn:
-
How to choose and work with light-to-mid-weight woven fabrics (and how to mix in knits for the panel!)
-
How to read and use a multi-size pattern (approx. 34″–66″ hips)
-
Techniques for inserting an elastic-back, sewing straps, interfacing, installing D-rings/buttons/snaps, and sewing large format pattern pieces
-
Tips for smooth finishes on pockets, flaps, and hems
Level: Intermediate, perfect if you’ve sewn pants before or want to stretch your skills a bit with new techniques.
Supplies other than the sewing pattern are not included. **You are responsible for bringing your own sewing machine and supplies.** You will receive a supply list from the instructor at least five days before the course begins.
