This is a 4-week sewing course that will be held in our sewing area at Community on Wednesday evenings with a maximum class size of 6 students.

In this class, students will learn how to sew a knit garment on a regular sewing machine. Students will learn how to choose the right knit fabric for a pencil skirt and a simple t-shirt. While constructing the garments, students will gain experience in working with digital pdf patterns, choosing their desired size, cutting knits, and assembling and finishing a garment using stretch stitches available on home sewing machines.

While this is a beginners to intermediate level class, students are required to have a basic understanding of how to use their sewing machine and be able to sew a straight line. If you don't yet know how to use your machine, please sign up for our Beginners Sewing Course.

By the end of this course, you will have made a slim, high waist pencil skirt with a hidden elastic waistband designed for knit fabrics from Sew House Seven, curvy or standard fit. You will also have made the The Core T-Shirt from Closet Core Patterns, a timeless wardrobe basic and fresh take on the classic crew-neck t-shirt.

Supplies are not included in the price of the course. **You are responsible for bringing your own sewing machine and supplies.** You will receive a supply list from the instructor at least five days before the course begins. Your sewing machine needs to have the following functions: Straight stitch and zig zag stitch, ability to adjust stitch length and width, and thread tension.

The instructor, Nissa McKinney, began her sewing journey more than ten years ago at a beginner’s class at Community. That class gave her the foundation she needed to start sewing more advanced projects. Today, a large percentage of her wardrobe is handmade - from jeans and t-shirts to coats and dresses. Sewing has become her superpower! When not sewing, she works s a writer for a kids' science journal, provides shuttle service for her two kids, and squeezes in a dance class or two at Dancefx.
