Beginners Sewing Course: May 29 - June 19, 2025

This is a 4-week introductory sewing course that will be held in our sewing area at Community on Thursday evenings with a maximum class size of 6 students.

Students will learn to be proficient with their sewing machine; how to wind a bobbin, how to thread the machine, adjust tension, and general machine troubleshooting. Students will be gain understanding in woven fabrics, will learn to be consistent in stitch quality and seam allowance, be familiar with how to handle fabric while constructing a garment, and learn sewing and fabric vocabulary. 

By the end of this course you will have made a cropped tank top from one of Community's own patterns. 

Supplies are not included in the price of the course. **You are responsible for bringing your own sewing machine and supplies.** You will receive a supply list from the instructor at least five days before the course begins. Your sewing machine needs to have the following functions: Straight stitch and zig zag stitch, ability to adjust stitch length and width, and thread tension.

Meet the instructor:

Hello! My name is Tommy O’Shea. In my family, tailoring is tradition. My Grandfather, his father, and two more fathers before that all worked their needles in Limerick City, Ireland. My interest in fashion brought me to love the magic of tailored clothes. It was that passion that led me to the Handcraft Tailor Academy in Monaghan, Ireland, to follow in the footsteps of my forefathers. I trained under Master Tailor, Rory Duffy, and learned everything I could about bespoke tailoring. Now I find myself in Athens as a new member of your community! I will be in residency here at Community and offering my tailoring services and teaching classes for a limited time from April to July.

For cancellations, you will receive a 75% refund until seven days before the beginning of the course. Cancellation seven days or less before the course results in a refund of 25% of the workshop cost.  No refunds will be issued on the day the course begins or after the course has begun.
