Beginners Sewing Course (Beginners I): March 8 - 29, 2026

This is a 4-week introductory machine sewing course that will be held in our sewing area at Community on Sunday afternoons with a maximum class size of 6 students.

Students will learn to be proficient with their sewing machine; how to wind a bobbin, how to thread the machine, adjust tension, and general machine troubleshooting. Students will be gain understanding in woven fabrics, will learn to be consistent in stitch quality and seam allowance, be familiar with how to handle fabric while constructing a garment, and learn sewing and fabric vocabulary. 

By the end of this course you will have made a cropped tank top from one of Community's own patterns. 

Supplies are not included in the price of the course. **You are responsible for bringing your own sewing machine and supplies.** You will receive a supply list at least from the instructor at least five days before the course begins. Your sewing machine needs to have the following functions: Straight stitch and zig zag stitch, ability to adjust stitch length and width, and thread tension.

The instructor, Emily Greene, is a life long sewist with an MFA in set and costume design for theatre. She has worked on Broadway productions, and was a freelance set and costume designer in the Bay Area before spending five years at Laika Studios in Portland, Oregon. She is passionate about garment, and costume construction, thrifted re design, and natural dyeing, especially working with indigo.

For cancellations, you will receive a 75% refund until seven days before the beginning of the course. Cancellation seven days or less before the course results in a refund of 25% of the workshop cost.  No refunds will be issued on the day the course begins or after the course has begun.
