This two hour in-person machine and hand sewing workshop will be held on Saturday, October 11, from 10am - 12pm in our sewing area at Community. It is available to ages 18+ with a maximum class size of 6 students.
The instructor, Evelyn Russell, works at Community as a redesigner and seamstress. She is studying Fashion Merchandising and Fabric Design at the University of Georgia and is pursuing a career in sustainable textiles and fashion.
What to expect: In this workshop, you will learn how to hem garments using both machine and hand-sewing techniques, such as the blind hem stitch, backstitch, and machine hem. These techniques allow you to customize the fit and style of your garments, while extending their lifespan by repairing fallen hems. Hems covered in this class include denim/jeans hemming, blind hemming, and rolled hems, as well as providing insight into how to fit and tailor garments at home.
While this is a beginners level class, students are required to have a basic understanding of how to use their sewing machine and be able to sew a straight line. If you don't yet know how to use your machine, please sign up for our Beginners Sewing Course.
What you’ll need: Please bring a few garments that you would like to alter or repair.
Supplies are not included in the price of the course. **You are responsible for bringing your own sewing machine and supplies.** You will receive a supply list at least from the instructor at least five days before the course begins. Your sewing machine needs to have the following functions: Straight stitch and zig zag stitch, ability to adjust stitch length and width, and thread tension.
Cancellations may be made up to 3 days before the class for a 50% refund. Cancellations made within 2 days of the class are non-refundable. -
