Basic Alterations (Beginners II): September 13th - October 4th, 2026
-
Most of us struggle with finding clothing that fits us perfectly just off the rack or by ordering online. By learning basic alterations you will be able to adjust your wardrobe to better fit your body and your style.
This four week in-person machine and hand sewing course will be held in our sewing area at Community on Sunday afternoons. It is available to ages 18+ with a maximum class size of 6 students.
What to expect: In this sewing course, you will learn how to perform simple alterations on your own clothing. You will learn hemming, taking in, and letting out around the waist or bust of garments to customize the fit for you. We will go over techniques such as the ladder stitch, where and how to seam rip, blind hemming, backstitch, etc
What you’ll need: Please bring a few garments that you would like to alter.
The instructor, Haley Allen, is part of the Alterations and Custom Design team at Community. Born and raised in Athens, Haley has been sewing for 26 years. Her grandmother was a professional seamstress and taught her how to sew at age 10, learning how to make outfits for her American Girl dolls. She started doing her own alterations in high school when she couldn’t afford the new and trending skinny jeans, so she took scissors to her old bootcuts and never looked back.
Her favorite part of alterations is the transformation in how someone feels when they make their clothes fit to the body they have, instead of trying to mold their body to clothes that don’t fit. She’s excited to help people to take ownership and control over their wardrobe in a way that’s empowering and brings them joy. While this is a beginners level class, students are required to have a basic understanding of how to use their sewing machine. If you don't yet know how to use your machine, please sign up for our Beginners Sewing Course.
Supplies are not included in the price of the course. **You are responsible for bringing your own sewing machine and supplies.** You will receive a supply list at least from the instructor at least five days before the course begins. Your sewing machine needs to have the following functions: Straight stitch and zig zag stitch, ability to adjust stitch length and width, and thread tension.
