Fabrics 101 Workshop (Beginners I) - July 25th, 2026
This is a 2-hour workshop that will be held in the sewing area at Community on Saturday July 25th from 1:30-3:30pm.
In this workshop, students will learn the basics of choosing fabrics for sewing their own garments. We will discuss fiber content, fabric construction, fabric weight, stretch, and drape and how these characteristics impact our finished garments. Students will be able to begin their own swatch books for fabric reference, and we’ll also discuss some pointers for buying fabric in person and online.
The instructor, Nissa McKinney, began her sewing journey more than ten years ago at a beginner’s class at Community. That class gave her the foundation she needed to start sewing more advanced projects. Today, a large percentage of her wardrobe is handmade - from jeans and t-shirts to coats and dresses. Sewing has become her superpower! When not sewing, she works s a writer for a kids' science journal, provides shuttle service for her two kids, and squeezes in a dance class or two at Dancefx.
